Dundas and Mutual/Then and Now

The N/W corner of Dundas and Mutual in the early 1920's.
Now an empty lot....
The Sears warehouse is in the BG of both photos.

Sunnyside Train Station/Then and Now

An early postcard showing Sunnyside Station in 1920 or so. Built in 1912 it was demolished in 1973.

A small portion of the pedestrian access stairs can be seen buried under the grass.
as seen from Queen St.
Kubrick would be proud.
The station under construction in 1911. Again you can see how close the lake was to the train tracks.
A composite.

Queen and Broadview/Then and Now

This building next door to the east was demolished when the road was widened....

A quick (and poor) photoshop job.

The King Edward Hotel/Then and Now

This piece of furniture has an interesting history. It was given to me last summer by my aunt, Margaret Agnelli after my uncle, Albert Agnelli died.
Albert's father, John had worked at the King Edward during the 1930's and 40's and had aquired this piece (possibly a display cabinet) during his time there. I contacted the King Edward and they were interested in having it back as part of their collection. I gave it to them today and Ron (the restorationist) was very pleased to have it back after 80 years or so.
I look forward to seeing it on display in the near future.
Thanks to Pearl Famoso for helping to organize this donation.

Queen and John/Then and Now

The S/E corner of Queen and John as seen in 1919.
2010.
The five-storey building was originally constructed as the headquarters of the Methodist Church of Canada in 1913 by Burke, Horwood and White. The building was purchased by CHUM in 1985, and was re-opened in May 1987 as the new headquarters for the company and its various outlets, including Citytv Toronto (which was previously located at 99 Queen St. East).
The old CHUM building on Yonge Street in the 1960's with their "fleet".
A small collection of Chum ephemera from this Chum history site.

Ghosted Sign on Davenport

This ghosted sign is on the side of building at the corner of Davenport and Bedford. This was the location of the infamous Just Desserts Murder in the summer of 1994.
The building as seen in 1934 when it was Lewis' Grocers.
A current view.

Batman Trading Cards/Norm Saunders

When the Batman TV show priemered in the fall of 1966 we became obsessed with all things Batman, particularly the various trading cards that were sold at the Smoke and Gift shops. The first three series were hand painted by the late, great Norm Saunders.
These were followed by a second series of Photo cards with stills from the TV show.
Norm was a talented artist who had spent most of his time in comics and painting magazine (pulp) covers. He painted the original series of Mars Attacks cards in the early sixties and clearly defined the look and feel of the movie that was to follow 30 years later.
Quite a prolific illustrator, he was also responsible for the famous series of "Wacky Paks" as seen below.
Also a series of crazy hot rods, Weird Wheels, in the Ed "Big Daddy" Roth style as seen below.
His original artwork sells for a good price when it's available.
So check out his site: Norm Saunders.

Little Anthony and the Imperials/Hurt So Bad

A great song performed live on the Ed Sullivan Show 1965. The Lettermen also had a hit with this song in 1969.

Victoria and Shuter/Then and Now

The N/W corner of Victoria and Shuter in 1919 showing The Hyslop Brothers Cadillac showroom. The Brothers were also known for their bicycles.
The same intersection in 2010.
A bicycle badge and advertisement.
The complete Hyslop bicycle catalogue of 1922 can be viewed here. Some ephemera from and old catalogue.

Maitland and Jarvis/Then and Now

The intersection of Maitland and Jarvis in 1930 looking east. Jarvis Collegiate can be seen on the left and Maitland clearly ends here at Jarvis.
2010 and now Maitland continues through the intersection.
A quick composite of the two photos.

Peter and Richmond/Then and Now Plus

Looking north up Peter Street across Richmond in the summer of 1949 before the street was widened.
Again in 2010.
A composite of the two.

Diamond in the Rough/Chinatown

This Victorian on Huron Street has clearly seen better days. Despite the ravages of time and some poor modifications it's still very appealing.
It even has some of the original "cresting" above the front window.
