Royal York Hotel Trivia

The Ballroom of the Royal York Hotel.
When the ballroom was built in 1929 the ceiling murals featured 3 topless women. The public was so shocked at this public display of semi nudity that the artist was recalled and asked to cover 1 breast on each of the panels.

Terrible Movie/Great Poster

Dundas and Glenlake/Then and Now

The angle's a little off but you get the idea. The pedestrian bridge seems intact.

Staged Accident

These 1937 photos from the archives are labelled "Women in shorts "cause" car to crash into pole". Obviously staged as there is no damage to the front of the car. But it has been known to happen. Looks like University Avenue.

The Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg display from the 1935 car show at the CNE.
This Staples location on Yonge south of Shaftsbury is a former Auburn/Duesenberg/Cord showroom.
The large arch windows have been filled in but some details remain.
As Mark Moore points out, this was also a CBC studio for a number of years.
The original showroom in Auburn, Indiana.

More Yonge Street in the Early 1970's

Mark Moore, a Location Scout for film and television was kind enough to share these photos of Yonge Street from the early 1970's. Please click on the images for a better view.
Photos are by Charles Dobie copyright 1971-2011.

The N/W corner of Yonge and Wellesley.
The Coach House Restaurant is still there and the only greasy spoon left on Yonge.

A line up outside Sam the Record Man. Check out those bell bottoms and the prices.
There was a time when music was important and people would invest their time and money to get it. Now you just press a button and it's there, consequently it has no value as you've not had a personal investment to obtain it.......
Looking south past Sam's to the Edison Hotel.
The Hare Krishna gang that used to troll the strip looking for money and converts. The scared me when I was young.
