The 50s were all about subtext and insinuation; most people mistake all the cheery, happy middle class imagery for something monolithic. That's like saying that Douglas Sirk films are just melodramas for women. There was more ferment and anxiety happening there than anyone can imagine nowadays. The '60s, by making all that tension overt and exhibitionistic, damn near killed drama as we know it.
