The Hollywood Tavern on the Queensway as it appeared in the late 1950's. I can't say for certain but I suspect it was a somewhat elegant establishment along the lines of the Copacabana, the el Mocambo and even the Cabana Room at the Spadina Hotel.

It received a makeover in the 60's and became more of a bar.
Another angle. We went here in the late 70's when it was a Disco and then later when it was a club with bands. We saw Twitch play here and maybe B.B. Gabor...

ReplyDeleteNo it's not. We used to go there in high school when it was still the Hollywood and we had a big party there after graduation.
ReplyDeleteWhat school did you go to? I went to the Wood after school all the time, and was there every night. I miss it! A place where everyone knew your name.

ReplyDeleteI remember the old Hollywood in it's last incarnation as a strip club with a circular stage in the middle. It definitely, came up a notch as an exclusive strip club when it became the House of Lancaster. One of my favorite strip clubs. Thought it was very interesting, multi-level, a good size, the big walk-down entrance from high to the main stage, sports playing on screens, and convenient parking. Remember CFL players that would come through and massive cool guy Peter Kudrik who was always fun to talk with as security. It really felt big time and with the many memories I know I'm not the only one to miss it.

ReplyDeleteBack then, strip joints were gentleman's clubs. Classy, even had comedians along with the burlesque shows; the days when nudity was a novelty. Unfortunately they have become something completely different today, sad.
