There are some great paintings of lost Toronto by Gerald and Setsuko Lazare
to be found here.
Hollywood Jobbers re-located to the building on the left when the original site was demolished. They then moved up to John Street before retiring.
Hollywood Jobbers! I used to find such great stuff there - "new old stock" pleated gabardine trousers from the '50s with the tags still on them and my first real fedoras. It was a great place for the whole retro thing that emerged in the wake of punk. That and Mood Indigo, when it was just a couple of doors away. I don't miss much about that time, but that's one thing I do...
I think it was all part of what made old Queen West so attractive to us back then, before the chain stores took over. Cheap rent, cheap food and cheap clothes.
It was fun being a peacock back then, with youth and attitude on your side. I'm such a boring old fart now in my khakis and Gap jeans, but that's the way it's supposed to be. I just wish kids' "rebel style" today was a bit more interesting or attractive.
