More Vintage Dairy Queen


 These two are both in Hamilton Ontario.

    I can remember when Dairy Queen stores in some areas closed for the winter months. In my hometown the opening of the Dairy Queen was a sure sign spring had arrived.

    Yes, they would close and at Christmas they'd use it as a Christmas tree lot.

    There was a DQ near the corner of Lambton and Weston Road in Mt. Dennis. Walking there for an ice cream or a sundae at the end of a summer day was one of the great rituals of the season. It was seasonal, as I recall - empty from October to May.

    I knew the "high street" stretch of Weston that passed through the neighbourhood was truly dead when it closed some time in the late '80s. The street has never bounced back - I wonder if the Eglinton LRT station due to open sometime in my lifetime will help put some life back into it.

    There's sort of a modernized one on broadview at mortimer and an original one at st. Clair east and pharmacy...teems with people in summer evenings and smells like an old dairy queen. Yummy.

    Shoot, I should have remembered the St. Clair one. Grew up at Pharmacy and Lawrence area. But we went to the one at Victoria Park and Lawrence. Became a 'Steak Queen' I think.

    I live by the Mt Dennis location Rick M mentioned remembering a location by. My older cousins and sister had always mentioned remembering a Dairy Queen. As I can never recall, I'm curious as how it looked and stumbled onto your blog. Wishing I could see a photo of it one day.

      I have photos of the Dairy Queen on Weston Road at Bushey Avenue somewhere in my pile of camera cards. I will post it here and on the Mount Dennis facebook site when I come across them. You will see the photos at some point. I took the photos before it was torn down. I am sure I have the destruction photos too. What a shame these former businesses are long gone.
